Short answer. Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like substance that seeps from rock crevices in the Himalayas, Altai and other high mountain ranges, formed over centuries from compressed plant matter. Its active components are fulvic acid, humic substances, dibenzo-α-pyrones and trace minerals. It is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine and is taken today for energy, stamina and focus. A typical purified dose is 250–500 mg per day.

What is shilajit made of?

Shilajit — also written salajeet or mumijo — is a plant-derived exudate, not a mineral and not a resin from a single tree. Over centuries, layers of alpine plant matter are compressed between rocks and slowly broken down by microorganisms. In warm months the resulting material softens and seeps out of the rock face, where it is collected.

The main constituents:

  • Fulvic acid — typically 15–20% of purified shilajit, and the component most often standardised on a label. A small, highly soluble organic acid that binds minerals.
  • Humic substances — the larger organic fraction from the same decomposition process.
  • Dibenzo-α-pyrones (DBPs) — the group of small molecules most associated with shilajit's studied effects, particularly around mitochondrial energy metabolism.
  • Trace minerals — iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and others, in small amounts.

Colour and consistency vary by altitude and source. Genuine Himalayan shilajit is blackish-brown, softens in the hand and dissolves fully in warm water.

What is shilajit used for?

Ayurvedic tradition classifies shilajit as a rasayana — a rejuvenating substance — and uses it broadly for vitality. Modern use is narrower and centres on four areas:

  • Energy and fatigue. The most common reason people take it. The proposed mechanism involves mitochondrial function, which is also why the reported effect is more “less depleted” than “stimulated”.
  • Physical performance and recovery. Studied in the context of exercise capacity and post-exertion recovery.
  • Male hormonal health. A frequently cited 2016 clinical study of purified shilajit at 250 mg twice daily for 90 days reported increased total testosterone in healthy men aged 45–55. It is one study in a specific population, not a general result.
  • Cognitive focus. An area of ongoing research rather than settled evidence.

Worth being clear on what shilajit is not: it is not a stimulant. It contains no caffeine and produces no acute hit. People who describe it as working describe a raised baseline over weeks.

How much shilajit should you take?

Most clinical work uses 250–500 mg of purified shilajit per day, often split into two doses. Standardised extracts state a fulvic acid percentage; higher is not automatically better, and a product claiming an implausible figure is a warning sign rather than a selling point.

Formats:

  • Resin. The traditional form. A rice-grain-sized portion dissolved in warm water. Strongly bitter and earthy, and hard to dose consistently by eye.

Allow 8–12 weeks. Effects reported in the research literature accrue over months, not days.

Purification is not optional

This is the most important thing to know about buying shilajit. Raw, unpurified shilajit scraped from rock can contain heavy metals, mycotoxins and free radicals. Traditional preparation always involved purification (shodhana), and modern manufacturing achieves the same thing through filtration and testing.

Buy only shilajit that is described as purified and backed by a current third-party certificate of analysis for heavy metals. “Raw” and “straight from the mountain” sound authentic and are, in this specific category, the opposite of reassuring.

Who should avoid shilajit

  • Anyone with haemochromatosis or iron overload. Shilajit contains iron.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women. Insufficient safety data.
  • People with sickle cell anaemia or thalassaemia.
  • Anyone on blood pressure, diabetes or hormone-related medication — check with your doctor first.
  • Children.
  • Anyone with active gout, due to reported effects on uric acid.

Typically 8–12 weeks of daily use. The 90-day protocol used in the testosterone study is a reasonable benchmark for how patient to be. Anyone reporting a same-day effect is describing expectation rather than pharmacology.

Is shilajit safe to take every day?

Purified, third-party-tested shilajit at 250–500 mg per day is generally well tolerated by healthy adults. Daily use is the intended pattern. Unpurified shilajit is a different question entirely and should be avoided.

Does shilajit really increase testosterone?

One clinical study — 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily for 90 days in healthy men aged 45–55 — reported a significant increase in total testosterone. That is real evidence, but it is a single study in a narrow population. It should not be read as a guaranteed result for everyone, and shilajit is not a treatment for diagnosed low testosterone.

Should I take shilajit in the morning or evening?

Morning is the usual recommendation, on the grounds that a substance taken for energy is better placed early. It is not a stimulant, so an evening dose is unlikely to disrupt sleep — consistency matters far more than timing.

What is fulvic acid?

A small, water-soluble organic acid formed when plant matter decomposes. It binds minerals readily, which is the basis for the claim that it aids mineral transport. It is the component most commonly used to standardise shilajit products, typically at 15–20%.
